The Fool

In Tarot, The Fool represents new beginnings, transformation, and intuition. But its deeper lesson is about the paradox of wisdom through messy lived experience.

In Tarot, The Fool represents new beginnings, trust, transformation, taking risks, and leaping into the Unknown. But its deeper lesson is about the paradox of wisdom through messy lived experience.

A cheerfully whistled tune echoes through sunlit mountain paths. The air sparkles with excitement; leaves shimmer with early-morning dew. Butterflies fill the nearby meadow, and your stomach.

Something new is approaching. And you cannot wait.

The Paradox at the heart of The Fool is this:

To be wise, we have to be willing to look foolish.

The Fool can be viewed as the protagonist of the Tarot deck, making their journey through the Major Arcana. Wearing colorful clothes, carrying only a small bag for their journey, and accompanied by an animal companion, the Fool is in motion. Their gaze remains on the sky above, the endless possibility of life; they don't notice the cliff's edge beneath their feet. What lies below? A long drop, their broken body at the end? A quick fall that will scrape their knees, remind them of the ground?

From our perspective, it looks perilous. But perhaps the Fool knows more than we do. Perhaps this isn't their path – perhaps they've stopped along the way to take in the scenery, then will turn another way to continue. Perhaps they're mapping the journey ahead, so they know what to expect. Perhaps we expect foolishness and don't anticipate wisdom and forethought from this character. What does that say about us?

The Fool teaches us that the only real wisdom is that gained through lived experience. Yes, we can learn from books and the stories of others; however, the rawest, most true wisdom comes from living life, making mistakes, and learning along the way. The Fool is experiential wisdom, man as a lifelong student, the wisdom formed through trial and error. They set an example of taking action, of experimenting and taking the "wrong" path (a path can't really be wrong if it teaches us something, can it?). They refuse to sit around and do nothing and hope that they'll learn or experience new things. No, the Fool begins to move, trusting that the Universe will meet them along the way.

Numerology - 0

As 0, The Fool can be placed anywhere in the sequence of the Major Arcana, making their journey through the archetypes and stories therein. They are simultaneously the beginning, middle, and end all at once. They are the ever-present infinite potential of every moment. And, they are nothingness, the blank space onto which we project our selves.

Astrology - Uranus

As the planet of revolution and disruption, Uranus gives us an insight into the truly life-changing energy of The Fool. Uranus gives us a new way of looking at things, an original perspective that can change everything. He asks us to break with traditions that only keep us stuck, to question every story handed to us, to create a philosophy of life that suits our actual lived experience. Sometimes this is accomplished violently – a lightning bolt that burns the house down, an earthquake the uproots a tree. Sometimes it can be more subtly disorienting. Uranus pushes us to take action that changes our lives, not to just sit around waiting for something to happen to us.

You may feel The Fool in your life as:

  • a restlessness you can't name
  • a desire to find unexplored horizons
  • the itch to run away from your life

The Fool asks: "What have you been waiting your whole life to experience? Why not now?"
